Thermochemical modification of beech wood with ammonium hydroxide

چکیده
Abstract Four variants of the thermochemical modification were conducted on beech wood at a temperature 130 °C, employing NH 4 OH concentrations 5% or 10% for durations either 12 24 h. The weight% gain (WPG) and bulking coefficient (BC) initially calculated. Subsequently, wood’s degree discoloration was assessed using CIELAB-colour-system. Chemical structure alterations determined through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), while compressive strength parallel to grain measured. As concentration increased treatment duration extended, samples displayed simultaneous weight increase volume reduction. Δ E * values ranged from 19.33 21.09 units, indicating significant color alteration. FTIR analysis revealed differences between spectra unmodified control sample OH-treated samples. reduced in hydroxyl carboxyl groups within main side chains hemicelluloses. Additionally, decrease absorption peak intensity unconjugated carbonyl group 1740 cm − 1 indicated relative reduction hemicellulose content. Compressive tests showed that improved modulus elasticity, increasing it 10,898 MPa (in sample) range 11,663 13,390 MPa. Similarly, 77.10 81.56-107.19 Interestingly, this improvement more pronounced with higher prolonged durations.

Chemical Modification of Beech Wood: Effect on Thermal Stability
Beech sawdust was reacted with phthalic (PA) and maleic (MA) anhydrides for chemical modification. The influence of reaction time and anhydride amount was investigated. IR spectra gave evidence of wood esterification. Thermogravimetric investigation of chemically modified wood indicated a better thermal stability (mainly for wood treated with phthalic anhydride) in comparison with the untreated...
متن کاملAmmonium Hydroxide Treatment of Wheat Straw
Chopped wheat straw, containing increasing amounts of added water was treated with a constant level of ammonia (3.3 percent of straw dry matter) as ammonium hydroxide, and stored for I to 60 days before determing in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVD MD), nitrogen content and fiber-bound nitrogen (ADF-N) versus free ammonia nitrogen (NH3N) of the treated sample. The overall improvement (e.g., ...
متن کاملInfluence of hydrothermal treatment on the dimensional stability of beech wood
Hydrothermal treatment of wood material products with many interesting properties such as enhanced dimensional stability, lower equilibrium moisture content and increased biological durability. The effects of hydrothermal treatment on dimensional stability, oven dry density and water absorption of beech wood (Fagus Orientalis) naturally grown, has been studied in present research that extremely...
متن کاملAdhesive Penetration in Beech Wood Part I: Experiments
A study with synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy (SRXTM) of PUR, PVAC, and UF adhesive bond lines in beech wood, bonded under various growth ring angles is presented. After determining the hardening characteristics of the adhesives, we evaluate the bond line morphologies, and the adhesive penetration into the wood structure. We find distinct bond line imperfections for the differ...
متن کاملThe stability of uric acid in ammonium hydroxide.
We examined the stability of uric acid in dilute aqueous ammonium hydroxide solution by mass spectrometry. Uric acid decomposes in ammonium hydroxide even as dilute as 15 mmol/L when the mole ratio of ammonium hydroxide to uric acid is 50:1. There are at least four products of the decomposition, two of which have been identified as allantoin and urea. The slope of the decomposition curve indica...
